Why have a hysterectomy?
Hysterectomy is the second-most common surgical procedure for women in the United States (cesarean section is first). In a hysterectomy, the uterus is removed. This procedure may be done for a number of reasons, including the presence of uterine fibroids, uterine prolapse, endometriosis, and endometrial (uterine) or ovarian cancer.
As a patient of Jordan Valley Cancer Center, you may be presented with the option of hysterectomy for treating endometrial or ovarian cancer. This treatment option may be especially effective for women with early stage gynecologic cancer. Hysterectomy may be combined with other treatment modalities, such as radiation or hormone therapy.
What is the da Vinci Surgical System?
The da Vinci Surgical System is an innovative robot-assisted surgical tool that allows physicians to perform complex surgeries with just a few very small incisions. This results in fewer complications, less blood loss, and shorter hospital stays than traditional open surgery. There are even similar benefits (discussed below) when the procedure is compared to traditional laparoscopic surgery.
While the da Vinci system uses robot-assistance, it is fully operated and controlled by the surgeon. During the procedure, the surgeon uses small, tremor-resistant controls to guide the system’s arms. The system automatically scales down the physician’s motions in order to coordinate precise surgical movements. A special camera and intraoperative 3-D viewer positioned above the control station allow the surgeon to see all the necessary operative areas in great detail. This real-time information helps the surgeon ensure accuracy in his or her work.
How does da Vinci hysterectomy work?
During the procedure, the physician makes a few 8 mm incisions on the abdomen. A small camera (endoscope) is inserted through one of these incisions to allow the surgeon to have a view of the operative area. Surgical tools are inserted through the other incisions; these tools are used to remove the uterus and any other portions of the anatomy that your surgeon may discuss with you ahead of time.
What are the benefits of da Vinci hysterectomy?
Compared to traditional open surgery, da Vinci simple total hysterectomy offers the following potential benefits:
- Fewer complications
- Fewer blood transfusions
- Shorter length of stay
- Less estimated blood loss
Compared to traditional laparoscopic surgery, da Vinci simple total hysterectomy offers the following potential benefits:
- Similar or fewer complications
- Similar or fewer blood transfusions
- Similar or shorter length of stay
- Similar operative time
- Similar or lower conversion rates
- Less estimated blood loss
Are there any risks?
Certain risks accompany all surgical procedures. Basic surgical risks include infection, scarring, bleeding and injury to healthy tissues. Risks unique to da Vinci hysterectomy include urinary tract infection and blocked lung artery. However, these risks are rare. Hernia at the incisions site (also rare) is a possibility in any minimally invasive surgery.
